The travel photos were shot by German teacher Kurt Hielscher while he was holidaying in Spain and was forced to stay there due to the outbreak of World War I.
I have a great appreciation for this website and for the geotagging of the published photos. I have a copy of Picturesque Spain and love it. In his words he states that he only published a small portion of his photos. Is it known where his negatives are?
thank you very much for this great website. I have nearly all books of this excellent photographer Kurt Hielscher. It is very difficult to get information about Kurt Hielscher. So i am happy to get more information on this site and a visualisation of the locations of these photographs. You can still buy a “Hielscher” camera, 9×12 black and white film and take pictures. You see, that for high quality photographs you don’t need expensive and modern camera equipment … but you need an “eye” like Kurt Hielscher.

His negatives were lost at the end of WW II due to the allied bombings of Leipzig.
